California Coast in Color Residency

Key Elements

  1. Produced a 6-week artist residency highlighting photographers exploring the intersection of nature and environmental activism for Black Image Center

  2. Managed the entire program budget of $40,000

  3. Produced meals, snacks and refreshments for each weekend program date

  4. Produced the final artist show at REI in Marina Del Rey

Background

After successfully working on one-off fundraising events and the farewell party, Black Image Center hired Red Eye to produce their summer Artist Residency, California Coast in Color. The residency brought together a group of 11 photographers with a love and connection to the outdoors, for 6 weeks of programming, field trips, panels, and conversation. Funded in partnership with Justice Outside, Red Eye managed the entire program budget of $40,000. For each of the 6 weeks, we staffed the program, ensuring meals, snacks and refreshments were present, securing venues where needed, and securing gifting for our resident artists. At the end of the program, residents came together to present their work at REI in Marina del Rey. After the opening event and panels, the artist’s work stayed on display for a month in the stores.

The Impact

This was a new type of project for Red Eye: supporting event logistics over a period of time, managing a larger budget, and producing an art show. Through the experience, we got the honor of witnessing the development of 11 Black photographers as they learned, connected and explored the history of the California Coast, and what environmental justice looks and feels like to them.
